Is Your Pool Losing Water?
Every pool loses some water to evaporation, especially in Florida heat. The bucket test is a simple way to tell normal evaporation from a leak:
- Fill a bucket about two-thirds full of water.
- Set it on a pool step so it sits flat and will not move.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket.
- Mark the pool’s water level on the outside of the bucket.
- Wait 24 hours, then compare the two marks.
If the pool dropped noticeably more than the water in the bucket, you likely have a leak. If both dropped about the same, it is likely evaporation.
Where Vinyl Liner Pools Usually Leak
- Tears or small holes in the liner, corners and steps, and underwater lights
- Worn gaskets and faceplates
- Plumbing and equipment: pipe connections at the pump, filter and valves
Do’s and Don’ts When Your Pool Is Losing Water
Do
- Do the bucket test before you assume the worst.
- Check the equipment pad for drips, puddles or wet ground.
- Look for tears at the corners and steps.
- Keep the water level at or above the wall fittings and no higher than the middle of the skimmer while you look.
- Call Andy early. Ongoing water loss can cause wrinkles in the liner.
Don’t
- Don’t drain the pool to find the leak. An empty liner can shrink and crack.
- Don’t drain more than half of the water.
- Don’t ignore a pool that keeps dropping. The longer it goes, the more it can cost.
- Don’t keep patching a liner that is old, faded or brittle. It may be time for a new one.
Patch, Leak Detection or a New Liner?
A Patch
A small tear in a liner that is otherwise in good shape can often be patched underwater, without draining the pool.
Leak Detection
If you are losing water and cannot see a tear, the leak may be in a fitting or the plumbing. Andy can tell you when to call a leak detection company.
A New Liner
If your liner is faded, brittle or failing in several places, a new liner is usually the better value. See vinyl liner replacement.
What Customers Say
Dear Andy, Thank you for returning my call so promptly. I really appreciate the tip you gave me for putting back in the gasket / o-ring around the top of my vinyl pool. Your advice worked like a charm. I know you did not have to tell me that info but I thank you for your honesty. Should I need pool repair assistance in the future you will be the first person I call.
